Removal and install of a steering box on a 1962 Chrysler. This should run true for 1960 through 1964 Chryslers.
Corrections & clarifications from Don Verity:
The wear on the sector teeth is actually greatest on the off center positions. There is very little stress on them when going straight ahead, but there is much more force when cornering. When I adjust them to specs, they are usually slightly tight in the center position, and if the gear assembly is good there will be little or no play at full left or right. Once those gear teeth are worn, it's best to find another box. The 2 wearing parts are the biggest ones in there, and I don't think they are available new.
The other thing is play in the steering wheel. There will always be play without the engine running. The pin that changes the valve direction is acted upon by 2 flexible discs and a collar in the box. With the engine running, as soon as you touch the wheel the gear moves. With it off, the discs will flex until they hit there limit on either side. The movement is what controls the valve in the valve body on top of the box. You can tighten the adjuster all you want and the play will not go away.
