🕉️ Historical Significance
The caves represent the Jain influence in ancient Odisha (then Kalinga).
Udayagiri means “Hill of Sunrise” and contains 18 caves.
Khandagiri (nearby hill) has 15 caves — together they show India’s earliest examples of rock-cut architecture.
The Hathigumpha inscription, carved in Brahmi script on the wall of Cave 14 at Udayagiri, records King Kharavela’s life, victories, and contributions to religion and culture.
🕋 Architecture & Art
The caves feature ornate carvings of dancers, animals, royal processions, and mythological scenes.
Some notable caves:
Rani Gumpha (Queen’s Cave) – The largest and most beautiful, with double-storey chambers and carvings.
Hathigumpha (Elephant Cave) – Contains the historic Kharavela inscription.
Ganesh Gumpha – Famous for carvings of elephants worshipping Lord Ganesha.
