The Vasari Corridor in Florence, is now open to walk through creating a wonderful new addition to your Florence itinerary. Built in 1565 it has never been open for the general public to view, until now. Walking through the majestic arches of the Uffizi Gallery onto the banks of the Arno river, and then across the Ponte Vecchio and to the Pitti Palace, is an enchanting experience.
The Vasari Corridor, is one of the most astonishing and atypical architectural works in the world. Today, the Vasari Corridor offers spectacular and unique views of Florence.
The Vasari Corridor is an elevated enclosed walkway that connects the Uffizi Gallery to the Boboli Gardens and Pitti Palace, on the other side of the Arno river. The corridor runs over the building on the banks of the Arno river, over the jewellery shops of the Ponte Vecchio, sidesteps the Mannelli Tower, and passes through the Church of Saint Felicita.
The man who designed and built it was more than a prodigy. He was an explorer, a painter, and an architect. He worked for two Popes, created innumerable masterpieces, and was the world’s first art historian. His name was Giorgio Vasari.
In 1554 Giorgio Vasari was entrusted with the renewal of Palazzo della Signoria, then assigned a majestic new project: the Uffizi, the gallery which would later house one of the world’s most extraordinary art collections. Cosimo Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany also longed for a protected route from his home in the Pitti Palace to the government headquarters. Vasari found the solution: a secret aerial passageway. The corridor was built in just 5 months.
What many visitors want to know is how long the Vasari Corridor is. The “grand corridor” is exactly 760 meters long, starting from the second corridor of the Uffizi Gallery and ending right next to Buontalenti’s eerie Grotto in the Boboli Gardens.
The views from its windows provide some of the most breathtaking glimpses of Florence. In the 17th century the Medici family chose to enhance the Vasari Corridor further by having paintings hung along the walls thus further enhancing the passageway’s allure.
The Vasari Corridor can be accessed by purchasing a ticket to the Uffizi Gallery plus a special supplement, costing 47 euro in total. Reservations are required. The Vasari Corridor can be accessed Tuesday to Sunday, at the booked time, one group at a time, for a maximum of 25 people. No more than 5 tickets may be purchased at any one time, even for different date/time slots. The Corridor can only be walked from the Uffizi, over the Ponte Vecchio before exiting in the Boboli Gardens.
