It’s So Funny How Much Fox Hates Kendrick Lamar

Wouldn’t you know it, Republicans are absolutely losing their minds over Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Kendrick pulled off something that few artists could do: he made the Super Bowl Halftime show into protest art. Usually the big game’s intermission performances are reserved for light and fluffy pop acts like Katy Perry. (But the left shark’s awkward dancing was fun, right?) Kendrick’s performance on the other hand was rich with symbolism, exploring what it is like navigating white scrutiny as a black person in America. Plus, he dropped some choice verses like, “The revolution is about to be televised. You picked the right time, but the wrong guy,” and “Forty acres and a mule, this is bigger than the music”. He did all this while performing huge hit songs like “Humble” and “DNA” from his 2017 album Damn. But, as you can imagine, all of this made MAGA’s heads explode!

If you get all your opinions from Fox, you would think that Kendrick’s performance had no “mainstream appeal.” This is code for no appeal to old white boomers, and seemingly every host on Fox News gave this same lukewarm take. Of course this is all completely asinine. Kendrick Lamar is the biggest name in Hip Hop right now, and one of the biggest musical artists in the world. Period. His Drake-inspired diss track “Not Like Us” literally has over one billion streams on Spotify to date, and had a stadium of sixty five thousand people screaming “a minor” in unison. But nothing triggers MAGA more than seeing black excellence, so let’s pretend that nobody knows Kendrick.
