In this special Prodigy Physics problem, we revisit Aristotle’s law of motion—the long-abandoned idea that force is proportional to velocity rather than acceleration. While historically incorrect, this pre-Newtonian model can surprisingly provide a useful approximation in highly resistive systems.
We examine a concrete physical scenario: a large rock dragged through thick mud, where the resistive force is proportional to velocity. Using Aristotle’s law 𝐹=𝑚𝑣, you are asked to model the motion of the rock, determine its velocity and position, identify the meaning of the constant 𝑚, and explore when this approximation resembles the true Newtonian behavior.
