In this first video of a new junk journal series, I begin transforming an authentic 1901 Victorian book into a feminine, late-Victorian–inspired commonplace book.
Using an antique copy of The Ladies’ New Medical Guide, I carefully gut the original text block, assess the structure of the cover, and construct a new spine designed to support a layered, hand-built text block. From there, I begin selecting papers and materials that will become the folios and signatures, with close attention to colour, texture, and period-appropriate detail.
The aesthetic for this project is rooted in late-Victorian domestic ephemera: ivory and cream papers, soft pastel tones, delicate aging, and authentic scraps that feel consistent with the book’s original era. This commonplace book is intended as a curated space—part reference, part reflection—rather than a traditional journal.
In this episode, you’ll see:
The deconstruction of an antique book (1901)
Preparation and reinforcement of the cover
Construction of a new spine
Early folio selection for the signature structure
Future episodes will explore assembling signatures, and layering Victorian-style ephemera and details throughout the book.
