Not typically my thing, but coming from an immigrant Irish family the Pogues held every relevance for me. When Shane inevitably left us, i started looking for images of the migration and the Irish Hunger to knock into one video. Released in 1988 on the weirdly back and forth album 'If i should fall from grace with god' an album schizophrenically flirting with trumpets on the awful Fiesta and then with dreamy beautiful full folk accompaniment on the broad majestic shannon & needing to ignore fairytale of NewYork as stand alone it was thousands are sailing that stood out at me. I ignored much of this album for decades until I began looking back into my own Irish roots (88% according to Ancenstry .com ) and as i age also it seems more pertinent. Written by fellow Pogues member Philip Chevron i have heard the song covered many times. But the undying power of the song is not only the song itself but in Shane's voice and the conviction and delivery in every word. A fact often overlooked by those covering it . Dedicated to the one band I've heard do it justice, Rabies from Germany .
