The Lamentations and Consolations were published in 1914, the year World War I broke out. Bortkiewicz, born in Kharkov, Ukraine, was living in Berlin. As Russian citizens, he and his wife were both placed under house arrest, then deported to Russia. He returned to Kharkov, where he established himself as a music teacher, and also gave concerts.
Bortkiewicz faced much persecution in his life. During World War II, many printed stocks of Bortkiewicz’s music, and even some of his original publishing manuscripts were destroyed, virtually eliminating hope for royalties.
I find it inspiring that he was able to compose much beautiful music despite frequent periods of adversity.
