Canton of Valais / Wallis
It is one of the 26 cantons forming the Swiss Confederation. It is composed of thirteen districts and its capital and largest city is Sion. The flag of the canton is made of thirteen stars representing the districts, on a white-red background. Valais is situated in the southwestern part of the country. It borders the cantons of Vaud and Bern to the north, the cantons of Uri and Ticino to the east, as well as Italy to the south and France to the west. It is one of the three large southern Alpine cantons, along with Ticino and the Grisons. It is a bilingual canton, French and German being its two official languages. Traditionally, the canton is divided into Lower, Central and Upper Valais, the latter region constituting the German-speaking minority. Valais essentially coincides with the valley of the Rhône from its headwaters to Lake Geneva, separating the Pennine Alps from the Bernese Alps. A major wine region, the canton is simultaneously one of the driest regions of Switzerland in its central Rhône valley and among the wettest, having large amounts of snow and rain up on the highest peaks found in Switzerland, such as Monte Rosa and the Finsteraarhorn.
Sierre
It is the capital of the district of Sierre in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It has a population of 16,332. Sierre is nicknamed City of the Sun (French: Cité du Soleil) for its average of 300 days of sunshine a year. It is the last official French speaking city in Valais before the French–German language border of the canton located at the forêt de Finges, few kilometres after the town. A German-speaking minority lives in Sierre, as it counts around 8% of the population. Sierre is first mentioned about 800 as Sidrium, though a 12th-century document refers to the village being founded in 515. In 1179 it was mentioned as Sirro and in 1393 as Syder.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Sierre became economically important as very early aluminium smelting is enabled by its access to hydroelectricity. Today the aluminium industry Novelis and Alcan employs 1,200 workers in Chippis and Sierre. In 2007, the agglomeration of Sierre/Crans-Montana was formed to address created to common problems, especially in the fields of tourism and transportation.
Leuk
Leuk (French: Loèche-Ville) is a municipality in the district of Leuk in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. On 1 January 2013 the former municipality of Erschmatt merged into the municipality of Leuk. Since it controls access to the Gemmi Pass, it had some importance from the time of Roman Raetia. The Leukerbad thermal baths are just north of Leuk, towards the pass. It is the capital of the Leuk district of the Valais.
Visp
(French: Viège) is the capital of the district of Visp in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It lies in the Rhône valley, at the confluence of the Vispa and the Rhône, 9 km (6 mi) west of Brig-Glis.
Stalden
It is a municipality in the district of Visp in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It lies at the foot of the Mischabelhörner and Dom (4,545 m [14,911 ft]). Stalden has an area, as of 2011, of 10.5 square kilometers (4.1 sq mi). Of this area, 10.0% is used for agricultural purposes, while 71.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 6.4% is settled (buildings or roads) and 11.7% is unproductive land. The municipality is located in the Visp district, at the branching of the Matter and Saas valleys. It consists of three formerly independent villages Stalden Dorfmark, Chinegga (since 1805) and Niederrusen (since 1817, now called Neubrück). Being well within the Alps, the region of Stalden is notably the driest location in Valais and Switzerland, with 545 mm of rainfall per year measured at the Ackersand meteorological station.[5] In comparison, Locarno (south side of the Alps) receives 1897 mm of rain per year.
