The Structure of Definitions in Metaphysics H.2-3

Abstract
For Aristotle, a definition must satisfy both a complexity constraint and a unity constraint. On the one hand, a definition must consist of several parts; on the other hand, it must be a one. It is not obvious how these two constraints can be satisfied at the same time, and Aristotle criticizes the Platonists for not being able to do so. In my talk, I will deal mainly with the complexity constraint, based on an analysis of H.2-3. I will argue that Aristotle does two things: on the one hand, he establishes criteria for the complexity constraint, and on the other hand, he shows what the objects of definition are, how to identify the constituents of a definition, and how they are related to each other.
