Boulder by Eva Baltasar | Book Review | Queer Literature | Translated Fiction | Women Writing Women | Literary Minimalism | Desire & Autonomy | Catalan Literature | No Spoilers
In this no-spoiler review, I talk about Boulder by Eva Baltasar, translated from the Catalan by Julia Sanches—a stunning follow-up to Permafrost and a searing portrait of love, solitude, and the terrifying intimacy of domestic life. With her signature sharpness and poetic control, Baltasar explores what it means to resist conventional roles while still aching for connection.
We follow the narrator, nicknamed "Boulder," through a deeply introspective and quietly feral journey of falling in love with a woman named Samsa and wrestling with the slow erosion of personal freedom as desire transforms into domesticity. This book holds the wild tension between wanting someone and wanting to remain wholly yourself. It’s sparse yet emotionally intense, defiant yet tender.
In this review, I dive into themes of queer identity, motherhood, power dynamics in relationships, and the razor-wire prose that makes Eva Baltasar’s voice so distinct. I also reflect on how the translation preserves the book’s lyricism and emotional velocity. If you like books that are spare, honest, queer, and unafraid to confront discomfort—this one’s a must.
Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe if you enjoy literary fiction, translated queer books, and stories about women who live on the margins.
