Ruby’s Story – Road Traffic Accident Leading to Amputation and Fractured Pelvis

Ruby, aged 25, experienced a life-changing road traffic accident. At the time of her accident, she was a dedicated nurse working on the colorectal ward, with four years of professional experience, and mother to her six-month-old son.

Ruby, began her rehabilitation journey with STEPS Rehabilitation. We first spoke to Ruby in May 2022 about her progress and returned to visit her at home in September 2024 to see how she’s getting on.

During her intensive residential rehabilitation at STEPS, Ruby was simultaneously fitted for her prosthetics, starting with a Kenevo microprocessor knee, designed for lower-activity individuals.

Whilst focussing on her rehabilitation, Ruby was able to trial a range of advanced devices. Ruby’s prosthetist worked in close collaboration with the interdisciplinary team ensuring her rehabilitation was tailored to her unique needs. This holistic approach enabled Ruby to adjust to her new limb while maximising her recovery.

Her prosthetic rehabilitation was intensive and focussed on improving strength, balance, and confidence. STEPS Prosthetics also provided specialised amputee physiotherapy, ensuring every adjustment to her prosthetic leg aligned with her rehabilitation progress. Ruby continues to receive regular care, including check-ups and adjustments to meet her evolving needs.
