Praeludium in G minor, BuxWV149 - Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707), played by David Briggs at the Cathedral of St John the Divine, NYC
The great Aeolian Skinner organ of St John the Divine can work exceptionally well in baroque repertoire, as well as symphonic and contemporary. G Donald Harrison’s crystalline baroque plenum has all the clarity and elan which helps to bring this music well off the surface of the page. The 1953 Mixtures were undoubtedly conceived very much with this repertoire in mind.
Buxtehude was a colossal influence on the young J S Bach and the North German ‘stylus phantasticus’ was ever present in his organ compositions, closely allied to the ‘Werkprizip’ organs of the day, with clearly delineated divisions, both visually and in terms of fully-formed musical identity. In 1705 Buxtehude and Bach famously met in Lübeck - Buxtehude was 68 and Bach just 19. How fascinating those conversations must have been, based I am sure on a colossal mutual respect. Very sadly the Buxtehude organ was destroyed in the terrible bombing by the RAF in 1940.
I hope you enjoy this performance which I recorded back on Thursday 1st May.
