This performance was filmed at the d.b.a. in New Orleans on 21 April 2017 by my late friend David Wiseman of Preston, England. If you know the d.b.a., you will appreciate that it is difficult to get into a good spot to make a video in the very noisy and crowded conditions. David did very well. 'Yaaka Hula Hickey Dula', also known as 'Hawaiian Love Song', was composed in 1916 by Pete Wendling, with lyrics by Joe Young and Ray Goetz. The piece is played in the key of F and is very unusual in having a Verse of 25 bars (measures). I can't think of any other 25-bar tune. Tuba Skinny play the Verse just once (00:10 – 0038). Then they play the Chorus (16 bars [8 + 8]) from 00:39 to 00:56. The Chorus is based on an archetypical chord sequence (IV – I - II7 – V7 – I). In this lusty performance they work through the Chorus eleven more times. The seventh time features the banjo, the eighth features the sousaphone and the ninth the washboard.
