The story of Job is a story whose thematic framework stretches from faithfulness, loyalty, jealousy, envy, marriage, as well as ingratitude, to the blessings of the Lord in the life of His faithful children. These blessings cannot be vanquished by the wily and crafty machinations of the enemy, no matter how diligent he tries; he can delay it but he cannot prevent it from occurring, according to Senior Pastor Georges Ntemi.
The anonymous writer of Job paints a wonderful portrait of a man whose life was a deviation from the norm, as he was punished, not because he was wicked and evil but because he was quintessentially a good and blameless man who detested evil. As a result, the trial and tribulation of Job and the saving grace of the Lord is an important lesson in Christendom.
However, because of his wealth and prosperity, Satan became jealous and envious. One day, when God was holding a meeting in Heaven with his angels, the devil showed up after roaming the world and sought permission to go and test the faith of Job because the Lord had praised him as a faultless and blameless man.
The devil complained to God that Job was worshiping Him faithfully because the Lord had hedged him with blessings and made him a wealthy. However, God knew the heart of Job, so He gave the devil permission to put Job to the test.
From that perspective, the devil caused Job to lose all his wealth, including his entire flock of sheep and herds of cattle, his servants, and all his ten children. But Job was neither distracted nor swayed from worshiping God in sincerity and in honesty. In the words of Job: “Must we expect only the good from God and not trouble.”
After depriving Job of everything, the devil was still not satisfied, so he and sought permission from the Lord to inflict bodily pain on Job. When he is wife saw the sores on Job’s body, she became alarmed and told her husband to curse God and die, but Job rebuked her and continued believing in the saving grace of God. In the end Job prevailed and the Lord restored and doubled everything he had previously owned.
