Being a night security guard at a quiet office building sounded easy—walk the halls, check the doors, watch the cameras until sunrise.
But on my first shift, the day supervisor handed me a sealed envelope labeled:
RULES FOR SURVIVAL — READ BEFORE 11 PM.
I thought he was joking.
He wasn’t.
Rule 1: Never take the elevator after midnight. If the doors open on their own, step back and let it leave. The elevator has passengers you don’t want to join.
Rule 2: If you see lights on the 9th floor, report it in the logbook—but do NOT investigate. This building only has eight floors.
Rule 3: When reviewing the security cameras, if someone looks directly into the lens and smiles, even though they’re supposed to be alone—turn the monitor off until the timestamp passes.
Rule 4: At 2:17 AM, you’ll hear footsteps on the ceiling. Don’t look up. Don’t speak. Don’t breathe loudly.
Rule 5: If a coworker you’ve never met shows up and asks to be let inside, ask them for their employee badge. If they reach into their pocket, RUN.
Rule 6: When your shift ends, leave immediately. If the lobby lights flicker as you walk out, do not turn around… no matter who calls your name.
This building doesn’t sleep at night.
It wakes up.
