The Northern Tool + Equipment Legends Build: Student Challenge reignites one of America’s most iconic and untamed racing traditions: Flat Track. It’s fast. It’s fearless. It’s raw mechanical mastery on two wheels.

But this story goes beyond the bike. We’re building legacy—one weld, one turn of a wrench, one young tradesperson at a time.

Most of these students have never even heard of Flat Track—let alone understand the kind of bikes that race, the physical toll, or the sheer danger of it. That shock factor is part of the journey. At home, when they tell their dads or grandpas who’s mentoring them—Chris Carr, Scott Parker, Kyle Petty, Billy Lane, Terry Vance and Dave Perewitz—the reaction will be instant: disbelief.

This build does more than teach a trade. It reconnects generations, raises awareness of Flat Track racing, and introduces a whole new audience of young people to a sport that demands toughness, skill, and courage. The students are about to find out why Flat Track racers are a special breed—and how the bike they build plays a critical role in survival on the track.
