Best known for his numerous operas such as Dr. Heidegger's Fountain of Youth, the composer Jack Beeson was a student at Eastman School of Music and later with Bela Bartok.
His Symphony No. 1 doesn't appear to have any programmatic structure. Just three solid movements composed with a striking balance of expressive dissonance and vital melody. It's a wonder that we don't hear more of Beeson's instrumental music in recordings and centers for performance.
Performed by the Polish National Radio Orchestra
Conducted by William Strickland
