On Tuesday, November 13, 2018, a state historic marker was unveiled in front of the Bellamy Mansion Museum honoring the life of William B. Gould I-an artisan who, though born a slave, escaped to his freedom in 1862 and served for the Union navy through the remainder of the Civil War.
Many Gould family members were in attendance for this dedication ceremony, including William B. Gould IV, V, and VI. That evening, William B. Gould IV gave a talk on his great-grandfather and his book "Diary of a Contraband."
William B. Gould IV is a Charles A. Beardsley Professor of Law, Emeritus, at Stanford Law School. He served as Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB, 1994–98) and subsequently Chairman of the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board (2014-2017) among his many accomplishments.
