Social media algorithms can favour misleading and polarising content, posing risks to civic discourse and media freedom.
Recent elections have further highlighted how “recommender systems” that are used by social media platforms can amplify disinformation and foreign propaganda, potentially affecting democratic debate and electoral outcomes.
That’s why MEPs are set to ask the Commission for:
• an investigation into whether recommender systems of major online platforms are undermining democratic and violating EU digital rules.
• re-establishing fair ground for the dissemination of information online, countering harmful engagement-based recommender systems, and ensuring algorithms comply with users’ rights in line with the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA).
While the Commission has recently issued the first fine under the DSA against X for breaching transparency obligations, investigations are still ongoing to assess whether X has also breached the DSA in areas related to the dissemination of illegal content and combatting information manipulation. The Commission has also asked X to provide more information about its recommender systems
