-Location in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park
Kaʻaha is also the name of a coastal campsite in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on the island of Hawaiʻi.
It is located on a rocky shoreline with a protected cove known for good snorkeling.
The area is accessed by several challenging hiking trails and features primitive, three-walled shelters and a composting toilet.
The Kaʻaha campsite requires a backcountry permit for overnight stays.
-USGS data and monitoring in the Kaʻaha area
Seismic monitoring: The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) maintains an extensive network of seismic sensors to track earthquake activity in the park and surrounding areas. This helps forecast potential eruptions and provides data for creating seismic hazard maps.
Coastal change and hazards: Through programs like the Coastal Change Hazards Portal, the USGS conducts research on coastal erosion and sea-level rise. This is especially relevant to the Kaʻaha shoreline, which, like other areas in Hawaiʻi, is affected by coastal changes.
Volcano updates: The USGS provides real-time updates on volcanic activity for both Kīlauea and Mauna Loa. The Kaʻaha campsite lies on the flank of Kīlauea and is susceptible to its volcanic activity, which the USGS tracks through webcam imagery and scientific analysis.
-The word Kaʻaha can mean a few different things depending on the context, but here are the two most common:
🌊 Kaʻaha (place name) —
Kaʻaha is a remote coastal area on the south coast of Hawaiʻi Island, inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.
It’s known for its rugged lava shoreline, tidepools, and sometimes used as a backcountry camping or hiking destination.
The Kaʻaha Trail connects to the Kaʻū Desert Trail system, and experienced hikers sometimes trek down to camp overnight there.
📝 Ka ʻaha (two words) —
In Hawaiian, ʻaha can mean “meeting,” “gathering,” or “cord/line.”
So “ka ʻaha” could translate to “the meeting” or “the gathering,” depending on grammar.
