Walk with me during this 4K Walking Tour through Leeuwarden. This time we walk from the beautiful Prinsentuin to the equally beautiful Rengerspark.
The Prinsentuin is a park on the north side of the city center of Leeuwarden, in the Dutch province of Friesland.
In 1648, a park/pleasure garden was constructed on this site on behalf of Prince Willem Frederik of Nassau. It was a tribute to the end of the Eighty Years' War and the Peace of Münster. This part of the city would remain closed to the public for another 150 years. The park became public by order of King William I. He donated De Prinsentuin to the Leeuwarden population. The park was renovated several times, in 1734 in Le Nôtre style until it became freely accessible in 1795.
Around 1822 the garden was renovated again by Lucas Pieters Roodbaard. After a number of renovations, the garden was largely restored in 2004 in the style that Roodbaard had had it created at the time. Accommodations were also built at that time for the city marina.
The garden also houses the Pier Pander Museum, which opened in 1954. The garden from the novel The Copper Garden by Simon Vestdijk is probably the Prinsentuin. The most important parts of the story take place here. Leeuwarden Theo Douma invented and built the current catering facility called De Koperen Tuin. The establishment was officially opened in 1989 by the widow Mieke Vestdijk.
The Rengerspark is a city park on the north side of the center of Leeuwarden. In 1902, Mr. Wilco Julius van Welderen baron Rengers and his wife C.T. Baronnesse van Welderen Rengers-Looxma offered a plot of land to the municipality of Leeuwarden with the intention of creating a walking area on that site. This offer was accepted by the municipality. Landscape architect Hendrik Copijn made the design in 1904. The park was put into use in April 1906.
