Edith Elizabeth Cruse Mullins, 99, of East Ridge, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Jan. 31, 2011. She was born on Nov. 21, 1911, to the late William T. Cruse and Lillian Cook Cruse. She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and an East Ridge resident for 55 years. She was a member of Battlefield Baptist Church.Edith began her working career as a "hello girl" for the phone company. She later worked as a secretary for Redfords 5c & 10c and retired in 1974 after 19 years of service.Her 99 years were devoted to the love and care of her family. She served as a constant to console, guide and embrace her family as well as others that she loved and considered family. She embodied the spirit of an angel on earth and all who knew her were loved and blessed by the experience. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a beautiful smile. She was affectionately known as "Mawmaw" by everyone.She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, Fred B. Mullins Sr.; and daughter, Ruby Mullins White.Surviving family members include a devoted daughter, Barbara Mullins Shipley, of Harrison; and loving son, Fred B. Mullins Jr. and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Mullins of Sherwood, Ark.; and sisters, Irene Sheard and Lillian Maestrandrea, both of Hamilton, Ohio. She leaves behind a legacy of love through six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. Mawmaw has shown all who were blessed to know her the true meaning of unconditional love. She leaves behind a broken hearted family consisting of five generations. Her legacy of love will never be forgotten. She was the heart and soul of her family. We will all miss her, but know she is where she wants to be. The family would like to thank Hospice of Chattanooga for their love and support during the past few months. Blake Cruse Bettis, great-great-grandson and namesake will serve as an honorary pallbearer.Arrangements are by the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home & Crematory, Rossville.
