I start by discussing vacuum solutions of the Maxwell equations, and then state the result that the Einstein equations of General Relativity (which we have still not written down) have a vacuum solution called the Schwarzschild metric. The properties of this solution are discussed and it is identified with the gravitational field of a spherically symmetric static body.
