Types of Contact Lenses
Soft lenses – Flexible, comfortable, most common; available in daily, biweekly, monthly, and colored options.
Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) – Small, firm, long-lasting; sharper vision but longer adaptation.
Hybrid lenses – RGP center with soft edge; combines clarity with comfort.
Scleral & mini-scleral lenses – Large rigid lenses for irregular corneas or severe dry eye; require special handling.
Wear schedules – Daily disposable (most hygienic), biweekly/monthly (cost-effective), extended wear (overnight, higher risk).
Vision correction types – Spherical (myopia/hyperopia), toric (astigmatism), multifocal/bifocal (presbyopia), monovision.
Special uses – Colored/cosmetic, prosthetic, UV-blocking, orthokeratology (overnight reshaping), therapeutic/bandage.
Bottom line:
Soft lenses dominate for comfort and convenience, RGPs excel in clarity and durability, and specialty lenses fill unique medical or cosmetic needs.
