Coding qualitative data - how to code using Braun and Clarke's Reflexive Thematic Analysis

Coding is a really important part of Braun and Clarke’s Reflexive Thematic Analysis, but it can feel really hard to do, right?! You’re likely wondering if you’re doing it “correctly”, and that’s completely understandable. This technique is a qualitative method in which you are in the driving seat, you are making the decisions about what to code, what not to code, and how to code – that can feel really intimidating, especially if you have a massive case of imposter syndrome around your research!

Don’t worry, because in this video, I’m going to walk you through the coding process, show you some simple examples and give you the heads up about some of the common problems that arise with coding.

We’ll start by exploring what coding is, how to start it and how to go about refining and developing your codes as you get deeper into your analysis. Then we’ll look at some of the pitfalls, like over coding, vague codes, confusing codes with themes and not taking enough breaks – overwhelm is very common when coding qualitative data and I’ll share my insights on how to deal with that!
