The song is about accidental time-travel.
In 1939, twenty young men somewhere in England volunteer to fly off into space, apparently because the Earth is dying and they need to find new home for humanity.
They spend a year exploring and find new home planet for Earthlings to move to.
But when they return, they are shocked to find that a hundred years have elapsed on Earth, due to time dilation, which Einstein included in his theory of relativity.
And so, the Volunteers learn that it is the year 2039, and everyone they knew and loved has died long ago...
