What is Lakshana? Should Lakshana define Lakshya? or is Lakshana a subset of Lakshya? These are some important questions artists should think about as performers. It is known that Atana is a raga that is impossible to explore with just the Arohana and Avarohana in mind. This alapana is a great example of a raga exposition with purely sound as a guiding factor. Each sanchari blossoms into a series of phrases. A few months back I used a section from this alapana for 'Guess the raga' in Vaak's Instagram channel, in which 80-90% of the guesses we not atana. Has atana changed? or is this just a masterclass by Krishnan?
This alapana was followed by Thyagaraja's composition Mumurtulu. Link to this full rendition can be found in Vaak's YouTube Channel: • Ramnad Krishnan | Raga Atana | Mummurtulu ...
