Yarkand Old Town is an ancient city on the Silk Road. The winding and crowded alleys still preserve the lifestyle of centuries ago. Here you can see the authentic Uyghur life. The day I went there was windy and dusty weather, which is also common weather in southern Xinjiang.
It was once the seat of the Shache Kingdom among the thirty-six kingdoms of the Western Regions, and it was also the capital of the Yarkand Khanate of the Islamic dynasty. The dynasty began in 1514 and lasted for two centuries. Uyghurs credit the Khanate with collecting and perfecting the revered collection of music - the Twelve Muqams.
