Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium sees the athletics open with an upset, as Ugandan world-record holder Joshua Cheptegei is beaten by Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega in the men’s 10,000m. There was another shock in the tennis as world number one Novak Djokovic is upset by German Sasha Zverev in the semi-finals, ending the Serbian’s bid for a Golden Slam. Two three-peat bids fell short as Colombia’s Queen of BMX Mariana Pajon fals just short in the women’s BMX on a day marred by scary crashes, and France’s Teddy Riner is shocked by ROC’s Tamerlan Bashaev in judo but goes on to claim bronze. In swimming, Emma McKeon breaks through for her first individual Olympic gold medal in the blue-riband 100m freestyle, while South Africa’s Tatjana Schoenmaker put together a stunning swim to break the women’s 200 metres breaststroke world record.
