The human respiratory system is a vital biological system responsible for the exchange of gases between the body and the external environment. Its primary function is to supply oxygen to body cells for cellular respiration and to remove carbon dioxide, a waste product of metabolism. Proper functioning of the respiratory system is essential for energy production, regulation of blood pH, and overall survival.
The respiratory system is structurally divided into the upper and lower respiratory tracts. The upper respiratory tract includes the nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, and larynx. The nose filters dust and microorganisms through hair and mucus, while also warming and moistening the incoming air. The pharynx acts as a common passage for both air and food, and the larynx, commonly known as the voice box, plays a key role in sound production and prevents food from entering the trachea.
The lower respiratory tract consists of the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and lungs. The trachea is a rigid air passage supported by C-shaped cartilaginous rings that prevent its collapse. It divides into two bronchi, each entering a lung, and further branches into finer bronchioles. These bronchioles terminate in millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli, which are the actual sites of gas exchange. The alveoli have thin walls and are richly supplied with blood capillaries, allowing oxygen to diffuse into the blood and carbon dioxide to diffuse out.
Breathing involves two main processes: inspiration and expiration. Inspiration occurs when the diaphragm contracts and flattens, increasing the thoracic cavity volume and drawing air into the lungs. Expiration is usually passive, occurring when the diaphragm relaxes and air is pushed out. Together, these processes ensure continuous oxygen supply to tissues and efficient removal of carbon dioxide.
Thus, the respiratory system works in close coordination with the circulatory system to maintain homeostasis and support life.
