Chloé Zhao has done it again. Hamnet is a stunning reminder of why she’s one of the best filmmakers working today — a film that’s patient, intimate, emotionally raw, and directed with such confidence. The long, lingering shots force you to sit in these moments of grief, love, and desperation, especially during the birthing sequence and the scenes of trying to save the children. Zhao just gets it.
Jessie Buckley delivers one of the most moving performances I’ve seen in years. She’s absolutely extraordinary in every sense — layered, heartbreaking, and electric. Paul Mescal brings a quiet strength and warmth that beautifully grounds the story, and the child actors? Powerhouses. Truly some of the strongest young performances in recent memory.
And that final 20–30 minutes… it floored me. It’s cathartic, healing, emotionally overwhelming — the kind of ending that stays with you long after the credits roll.
In this review, I break down the direction, performances, emotional themes, and why Hamnet is one of the most powerful films of the year.
