Hidden Manchester: Secret Canal, Steepest Street & Luxury Hotel Tour

Join me on a stunning 17-minute walking tour of Manchester—exploring hidden canals, historic warehouses, luxury hotels, and the steepest street in the city centre. Whether you’re here for travel inspiration, Manchester history, or to find the best places to stay, this walk reveals a side of the city even locals don’t know.

We start on Ducie Street, beside the landmark 111 Piccadilly and opposite CITY Suites, just steps from Piccadilly Gardens and Piccadilly Station. From here, we pass the Premier Inn and head to Dale Street, following the Rochdale Canal towpath—a 19th-century industrial waterway lined with old mills and modern apartments.

Back on Ducie Street, we stop at the Grade II Ducie Street Warehouse*, then cross a hidden bridge where the Rochdale and Ashton Canals meet in the Piccadilly Basin—a secret canal junction tucked right beneath the road.

Next is the Dakota Manchester Hotel, one of the city’s finest five-star hotels with canal views, a champagne room, and luxury suites. We then take on Jutland Street, known as “Heart-Attack Hill,” the steepest cobbled street in Manchester with panoramic views of the Ashton Canal.

The walk continues past DieCast, Burlington House, Joinery, and Port One Street developments before arriving in Ancoats’ Little Italy, home to Helles St Michael’s—a former church turned apartments—and historic Victoria Square housing from 1894. We end at 39 Bengal Street and Roper Court, where Manchester’s industrial past meets modern living.
