Excerpt from "The Dvořák Cycle"
Dvořák composed his Requiem in 1890, at the height of his international fame. The work was commissioned by the Birmingham Festival in England, where it premiered in 1891 with Dvořák himself conducting. Unlike many of his other sacred compositions, which reflect personal or national inspiration, the Requiem is a funeral Mass, yet it remains deeply spiritual and introspective.
