This is Sony's "Wing in the Wind", a mid-1980's, Japan-region high-flying Sony demonstration tape showing the performance of the High-Band/Super Betamax format
"Wing in the Wind" take us on an world-wide adventure! Together, we'll fly over famous locations such as Hokkaido, The Great Barrier Reef, Manhattan, and more as the high-fidelity of the Hi-Band Beta format shows us the fine details of each locale.
Super Beta (known as Hi-Band Beta in Japan) was a small modification to the Betamax tape format which shifted recorded luma signal on the tape up by 800kHz. The horizontal resolution supposedly increased from 240 lines to around 270 lines and the shift also reduced Hi-Fi audio buzzing/interference. Unlike the competing Super VHS format enhancement and the later ED Beta format, Super Beta tapes were largely compatible with older Betamax decks, sometimes showing some noise due to the carrier shift. This is not to be confused with Super Hi-Band 6.0MHz (or Beta-Is) which used a faster tape speed to increase picture quality further.
Enjoy your tour of the world in Super Beta!
