The Kailasanathar Temple in Kanchipuram is a stunning example of Dravidian architecture and the oldest surviving temple in the city. Constructed by the Pallava King Rajasimha (Narasimhavarman II) in the early 8th century CE, it was one of the first structural temples built in South India, as earlier Pallava temples were carved from rock.
The temple is primarily built of sandstone, earning it the local name "the Sand Temple". For stability, its foundation is made of granite.
The walls and pillars are adorned with detailed carvings of Hindu art, featuring a vast number of forms of Lord Shiva, along with deities from Vaishnavism, Shaktism, and Vedic traditions.
