Carlos Dollar appeared in court for sentencing after pleading no contest to a felony. Although he applied for deferred adjudication, the judge denied it due to his long history of failed probation and violent offences.
The State opposed probation, citing previous charges like assault with a weapon, family violence, and drug-related offences, along with multiple probation revocations. Dollar admitted to using drugs to cope and expressed interest in treatment. His defence argued that prison would only delay the problem and requested court-ordered drug rehabilitation.
The judge disagreed, citing Alamogordo's record: he had been given multiple chances, including probation and deferred adjudication, but violated them all. The court emphasise that criminal history speaks louder than promises for change.
Dollar was found guilty, sentenced to 10 years in prison, fined $2,000, and ordered to pay $121 restitution. The judge warned that future felonies could result in 25 years to life under habitual offender laws.
Final warning: Prison overcrowding won't save you. The system will always find space for repeat offenders—even if it means sleeping in a hallway.
