India After Independence [Lec 2] Lecture of 7 October 2014, Fall 2014 course at UCLA. Introduction to thinking about modern India: role of language; pluralism in India; contrast with homogenization in the US. Would we study India just as we would study any other place? A brief introduction to the physical (and cultural) geography/topography of India; some remarks on demography. In the second half of this lecture, I begin with the formation of the East India Company. Establishment of British ports in India; the nature of the trade between India and Britain. Question: what made it possible for the British to rule India? The British become the paramount power in late 18th century; the rebellion of 1857. India as a Crown Colony, 1858-1947. Formation of the Indian National Congress, 1885; Congress and World War II; advent of the Muslim League
