Son regina e sono amante,
e l'impero io sola voglio
del mio soglio e del mio cor.
Darmi legge invan pretende
chi l'arbitrio a me contende
della gloria e dell'onor.
I am queen and I am lover, and I alone want dominion over my throne and my heart. Whoever disputes with me decisions about glory and honor will attempt in vain to give me laws.
Ana Paula Russo, soprano
Camerata Vianna da Motta
João Paulo Santos, cond.
Perez's aria makes effective use of several galant schemata, including the Galant Romanesca, the Heartz, the Prinner, the Modulating Prinner, the Indugio, the Overture, and the Fenaroli. The aria is remarkable for its reliance on a single type of cadence, referred to here as the "5 - 2 - 1 Cadence," common in mid-eighteenth-century Italian opera. This cadence features a treble line that traces the scale degrees 5 - 2 - 1, with 5 over a 6/4 chord, and a leap up a fifth from 5 to 2.
