Mistakes Were Made | Back Hollowing | First & Second Attempt

In this episode on Turned In Aus, I dive into Back Hollowing, one of the most advanced woodturning techniques – and give it a go for the very first (and second) time! 💥

The first attempt: A figured grain piece – visually stunning but gave me some real grief! Watch to discover More

The Second Attempt: A straight grain piece – where I refined the finesse and turned thin walls (2mm) and a base just 3mm thick.

Throughout both attempts, I used a variety of tools including:

Crown M42 ½" Spindle Gouge – for most of the hollowing
Crown M2 1" Square-End Scraper – to clean up the bottom
HSS 1" Skew Chisel – for those crisp corners

While I royally screwed up a few times, both pieces turned out well enough to serve as pen holders – and the learning experience was huge.
