The xebec was a Mediterranean ship with combined sail and rowing propulsion. It was developed from the Mediterranean galley and shared many of its features. The xebec had a much larger sailplan, however.
A xebec would have 2 or 3 masts with lateen sails in a fore-and-aft rigging. The combined sail area of a xebec was large meaning that it could gain speed fast and catch up to other ships.
This speed meant that the xebec was often used as a pirate ship especially by the Barbary corsairs of the Magreb coast of present day Algeria, where it was also developed.
