The Malabar Grey Hornbill (Ocyceros griseus) is a species of hornbill endemic to the Western Ghats and surrounding regions of India. These birds are known for their distinctive appearance, behavior, and vocalizations. Below is an overview of the male and female Malabar Grey Hornbill, including their calls and eating habits:
Male and Female Malabar Grey Hornbill
1. Physical Differences:
Male: The male Malabar Grey Hornbill has a larger casque (a hollow structure on top of the bill) compared to the female. The casque is pale yellowish or ivory in color. The male's bill is also larger and more curved.
Female: The female has a smaller casque and a shorter, less curved bill. The base of the female's lower mandible is often blackish, which helps distinguish her from the male.
2. Calls:
Both male and female Malabar Grey Hornbills are vocal birds, but their calls differ slightly.
Male Call: The male produces a loud, cackling call that sounds like a series of "kek-kek-kek" or "kak-kak-kak" notes. This call is often used to communicate with the female or to establish territory.
Female Call: The female's call is similar but softer and less intense. During the breeding season, the female may produce a series of high-pitched calls from inside the nest cavity to communicate with the male.
Both sexes also make a variety of other sounds, including grunts and squawks, especially during interactions or when alarmed.
3. Eating Habits:
Malabar Grey Hornbills are primarily frugivorous, meaning they mainly eat fruits. They play a crucial role in seed dispersal in their habitat.
Diet: Their diet consists of a wide variety of fruits, including figs, berries, and other forest fruits. They also occasionally consume insects, small reptiles, and arthropods, especially during the breeding season when protein is needed for chick development.
Foraging Behavior: These hornbills are arboreal and forage in the canopy of trees. They pluck fruits directly from branches and sometimes catch insects in flight or from foliage.
Feeding During Breeding: During the breeding season, the female seals herself inside a tree cavity to lay eggs and incubate them. The male is responsible for feeding the female and the chicks by regurgitating food through a narrow slit in the sealed nest entrance.
Behavior and Ecology
Malabar Grey Hornbills are social birds and are often seen in pairs or small groups. They are monogamous and form strong pair bonds.
They are cavity nesters and rely on natural tree hollows for breeding. The female remains inside the nest for several weeks, relying entirely on the male for food.
Their frugivorous diet makes them important for maintaining the health of their forest ecosystem, as they help disperse seeds across large areas.
Conservation Status
The Malabar Grey Hornbill is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, but habitat loss due to deforestation and human activities poses a threat to their population.
