Although leaders are typically the focus of leadership studies, considering evolution provides a unique opportunity to explore how followers have contributed to leadership throughout history. Rooted in evolutionary psychology, this presentation answers several questions about followers including why we follow, when we follow, who follows, how we follow, and why we follow. Along with overviewing the evolution of followers, I summarize Bastardoz and Van Vugt’s (2019) idea of the evolutionary mismatch, which argues that our followership instincts were build for small tribes, not complex modern systems, so we may be ill-equipped to effectively follow 21st century leaders. This presentation is based on Bastardoz and Van Vugt’s (2019) evolutionary analysis of the nature of followership.
