14,541 employees of Walmart across 9 states working at least 50 weeks per year made low enough wages that they also qualified for and were enrolled in the SNAP program. SNAP costs the US government $78 billion per year as of 2020. Walmart's gross profit that year was $129 billion.
🩹 This is colloquially known as "corporate welfare."
Our public safety net programs provide a lifeline to families that need help to meet their basic needs — but when they're primarily needed by people who are *already working full-time for giant corporations*, they act as subsidies that boost the bottom lines of the companies. Talk about a shit ROI.
