Andrew Hattersley is a Professor of Molecular Medicine at the University of Exeter, UK. His groundbreaking research on the genetic causes of monogenic-diabetes has transformed diagnosis and treatment worldwide. He and his team discovered that mutations in the potassium channel can cause neonatal-diabetes, and crucially, that many patients can switch from insulin injections to oral tablets, changing lives globally.
He has also led international collaborations to raise awareness and education around rare forms of diabetes, co-creating the “1 in Six Billion” podcast to connect science and patient voices.
During the EASD 2025 Annual Meeting in Vienna, Prof. Andrew Hattersley was awarded the 57th Claude Bernard Prize in recognition of his contributions to advancing genetics in diabetes, his innovative leadership, and his lifetime achievements in diabetes research and care.
