বাংলা পাঠ্যপুস্তকের জগতে 'ব্রহ্মা-বিষ্ণু-মহেশ্বর' বলতে বোঝায় গণিতের কেসি নাগ অর্থাৎ কেশব চন্দ্র নাগ, পদার্থবিদ্যার সিআরডিজি অর্থাৎ চিত্তরঞ্জন দাশগুপ্ত এবং ইংলিশ গ্রামারের পিকে দে সরকার অর্থাৎ প্রফুল্লকুমার দে সরকার। এই ভিডিওর আলোচ্য হলেন এই ত্রয়ীর অন্যতম পিকে দে সরকার যাঁর গ্রামার বই টক্কর দিয়েছিল ব্রিটিশদের নেসফিল্ডের গ্রামার বইকে। অথচ তিনি হয়ত একটি কোম্পানির কর্মচারী হয়েই সারাজীবন কাটিয়ে দিতেন যদি না তিনি তীব্র অপমানিত হতেন শুধু লাইব্রেরিতে নিউজ পেপার পড়তে চাওয়ার কারণে। সেই ঘটনা তাঁর জীবনের মোড় ঘুরিয়ে দিয়েছিল।

১৮৯২ সালে ব্রিটিশ ভারতের পূর্ব বাংলার রংপুরের নীলফামারীতে প্রফুল্লকুমার দে সরকারের জন্ম হয়। পড়াশোনার মেধাবী হওয়ায় কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে ইংরাজিতে MA পাস করেন। প্রথমে এক বিদেশি সংস্থায় কর্মজীবন শুরু করলেও পরে সেই চাকরি ছেড়ে গ্রামে গিয়ে শিক্ষকতা শুরু করেন। স্কুলে পড়ানোর সময় ইংরাজিতে ছাত্রদের অসুবিধেগুলি বুঝতে পারেন। সেই স অসুবিধা দূর করতেই তিনি নিজেই বই লেখার সিদ্ধান্ত নেন - আর সেই একটি বই পালটে দেয় তাঁর এবং বাঙালি ছাত্রছাত্রীদের ভবিষ্যত।

তাঁর বই "A Text Book of Higher English Grammar, Composition and Translation" এর বিক্রি এতই বেশি ছিল যে এক সময় তিনি শুধুমাত্র রয়াল্টির টাকা দিয়েই জীবন অতিবাহিত করতেন। পাঠ্য বই হিসেবে ১৯২৬ সালে প্রকাশিত বইটি প্রায় শতবর্ষের দোরগড়ায় একই রকম জনপ্রিয় এবং আজও ইংরেজি গ্রামার শিক্ষার অন্যতম হাতিয়ার।

১৯৭৪ সালে তাঁর মৃত্যু হলেও আজও তাঁর বই ছাত্রছাত্রীমহলে সমাদৃত।

🎥 Biography of P.K. De Sarkar

In the world of Bengali school textbooks, the “Brahma–Vishnu–Maheshwar” trio means: K.C. Nag for Mathematics, C.R. Dasgupta for Physics, and P.K. De Sarkar for English Grammar. This video is about one of that legendary trio – P.K. De Sarkar, whose grammar book gave tough competition to the British writer Nesfield’s grammar. Interestingly, he might have lived his whole life as just a company employee if he hadn’t faced deep humiliation once – simply for wanting to read a newspaper in a library. That incident changed the entire course of his life.

Prafulla Kumar De Sarkar was born in 1892 at Nilphamari, Rangpur, in then East Bengal, British India. A brilliant student, he completed his M.A. in English from Calcutta University. At first, he worked in a foreign company, but later quit the job and went back to his village to become a teacher. While teaching, he noticed the struggles students faced with English, and decided to write a book to help them. That one book changed not only his future but also the future of countless Bengali students.

His book “A Text Book of Higher English Grammar, Composition and Translation” (published in 1926) became so popular that he could live comfortably just on its royalties. Even today, almost a century later, this book is still widely read and respected as a key guide to English grammar.

Though he passed away in 1974, his book continues to be loved by generations of students.
