The Lutcher Theater Marketing Team had the privilege of sitting down for an exclusive conversation with retired American Airlines Captain Beverley Bass, whose real-life experiences are a critical part of the hit Broadway musical Come From Away.
A portion of this video has been selected to be screened and presented with an award at the 2025 Boomtown Film and Music Festival in Beaumont, TX
Beverley Bass was the third female commercial airline pilot hired by American Airlines in 1976 and went on to become the very first female captain in 1986. Bass retired in 2008, after a career thats panned 32 years. And, as she says in the signature song, “Me and the Sky,” she really did get her start earning $5 per hour flying dead bodies for a mortician in Fort Worth, Texas. She was 21 years old at the time.
Come From Away tells the remarkable true story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships.
On September 11, 2001 the world stopped. On September 12, their stories moved us all.
Come From Away arrives at the Lutcher Theater for the Performing Arts in Orange, TX on Thursday, January 2, 2025 at 7:30 p.m. Visit lutcher.org for ticket information.
