In an experiment, volunteers' sleep time was reduced from 9 hours to 5 hours. As a result, they not only ate more during main meals but also increased their snack intake, especially after dinner, consuming more than during any regular meal—essentially eating 4 meals a day. Lack of sleep causes a malfunction in the hormones that regulate appetite. After just 5 days of insufficient sleep, the volunteers gained 1.6 pounds.
