As the 2018 British Championships turned out to be one of the best meetings of the year, back at the same venue at Writtle near Chelmsford, great things were expected from this years Championships, and so it was. A day full of terrific racing, a few spills, and plenty of drama. Nobody could've foreseen what was going to unfold as the day went on.
One of the eagerly anticipated clashes would be in the 250cc Solo class. With 15 year old Jake Mulford given a wild card into the event, making it only his 2nd adult meeting of the year, and in his first, he demolished the opposition, which included former 250cc champion David Knowles. Would he be able to do the same to the likes of Luke Harris, and 2 time champion Henry Atkins, who is looking to win the title for the 3rd year in succession. An incredible final in this class, as it was last year.
The 350cc Solo's looked to be wide open, with Paul Hurry, Dave Mears, 2017 champion Rob Finlow, 2018 champion Tom Perry back to defend his crown, and Andrew Whitaker going so well on his 350 this season. Real drama in the final.
In the LH Sidecar Will Penfold had bought Charlie Ridley's outfit just for this meeting, as he now concentrates on the RH Sidecars, Tom Penfold, Tommy Penfold, and Billy Penfold, all in the mix, but the crew of the season so far, and pre meeting favourites had to be Rob Heath/Kyle Fish. Dominating every meeting this year.
The class of the day had to be the 500cc Sidecars. Such drama at last years championships, and it was more so at this years meeting. With 2018 winners Josh Goodwin/Liam Brown back to try and retain their title, but the crew they beat last year have been having some great results in Europe this season, and look an improved article on last season. So how would it pan out? Could Mitch Godden/Paul Smith produce the goods and take the title, or would it be multi champions Shaun Harvey/Danny Hogg? Absolutely fantastic racing in this class, right until the very end, where you could not have written more drama into the script.
