The trajectory of ‘crossover’ or ‘dual system’ children in the child protection and youth justice systems presents a significant and longstanding concern for both policy-makers and practitioners. Crossover children comprise up to 10% of child protection-involved children, and around 50% of justice-involved children in Australia.
In this webinar, Dr Susan Baidawi, Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work at Monash University and co-director of the Monash Criminal Justice Research Consortium, drew on a series of research studies to outline what is known about the characteristics of this group of children and their pathways to justice system involvement. She also discussed opportunities for practice and systemic change to prevent and address these pathways. A panel of experts from relevant DCJ policy areas also discussed what these findings mean for policy and practice.
This webinar was chaired by Merran Butler (Director, Statistical Analysis, Data Governance and Research, FACSIAR).
